The Literary Paper Essays - Fiction, Literature, New Criticism

The Literary Paper Your task is to dissect and grill the class' readings from this semester from your own point of view. The reason for the abstract examination paper is to acquire outside sources to convey some knowledge you have about the accounts, sonnets, and plays we've discussed this semester. Likewise with all that we do in class, there is no right or wrong answer; it's simply an issue of supporting your cases with proof and persuading your crowd. Your paper ought to be around 3-5 dad ges and incorporate at least three sources (however, the writings themselves check). Search for interviews with the writers, insightful articles composed by different specialists, or analysis. Your article ought to be in MLA organize and incorporate a works refered to page. The best spot in any case this task is to consider what the readings have left you pondering this semester. Consider an inquiry or a conversation that we've had that got you especially inquisitive. I recommend coming to converse with me about your point. Here are three essential prompts you can browse: Compose an abstract paper wherein you examine a creator's utilization of a scholarly component and disclose how it adds to the piece' s in general subject (For instance, how does Flannery O'Connor use incongruity to portray the lives of ladies in the old south?). Pick a focal point to dissect a piece from to examine a social issue (for instance, give a women's activist perusing of The Yellow Wallpaper or a verifiable perusing of A Rose for Emily, expound on the class issues present in The Death of a Salesman.) How does your focal point or way to deal with this bit of writing shed light on its importance or hugeness? Compose a scholarly exploration paper in which you consolidate essential examination, investigating how individuals react to various writings. (How do men versus ladies respond to the sonnet Barbie Doll in an unexpected way?). Here are some different thoughts I had while considering this undertaking today - How do these accounts/sonnets/plays depict the encounters of workers in the United States? You could pick maybe a few pieces to concentrate on here, and look at/differentiate the manner in which they show the settler experience. How does a piece (or pieces) investigate, outline, or challenge the possibility of American Exceptionalism? Here, you could maybe utilize a contemporary piece and show similitudes/contrasts among it and Winthrop's City on a Hill message as well as Common Sense. How do these accounts/sonnets/plays challenge social generalizing of minorities (or pick a particular gathering) in the United States? How do these accounts/sonnets/plays depict the encounters those in neediness in America? What makes a bit of writing women's activist? Here, you would need to do a little examination and discover a meaning of what women's activist writing implies. At that point, you could talk about how certain pieces do/don't fit into that definition. Some potential pieces incorporate The Yellow Wallpaper , and Wastes of time. What picture of the American Dream do these accounts/sonnets/plays depict? (Or on the other hand possibly look at how the possibility of the American Dream has created or changed by looking at/differentiating a portion of our pieces ). How do various gatherings of individuals (age, sex class) decipher (a particular bit of writing) in an unexpected way? This one would require a little essential examination, which can be similarly as fascinating. I would recommend utilizing a short piece, however , like a sonnet. For instance, how do men versus ladies respond to Poe's Annabel Lee? How do creators use incongruity (or another artistic gadget) to depict the predicaments of ladies (or another gathering of individuals) ? Great inquiries Are open-finished and have no reasonable answer. They are not entirely clear. Have a reasonable course Can be investigated through examination or potentially research A proposition is because of me by Wednesday, October 11 th First unfinished version due Monday, November 13 th Last draft due Wednesday, December 6 In the proposition, give me a concise depiction of what you intend to compose and a diagram of your contention

After the sum total of what this had been practiced you are then en route to a system that is secure. So as to make a system you should initially acknowledge what you are going to utilize the system for. Choosing how you need your system and the capacities you need it to do is convoluted. While making one you should truly consider what you are going to utilize it until further notice and what you see yourself doing later on with the system. While making a system you need to leave choices for overhaul. When you have chosen how you need your system, at that point you should take a gander at the security choices. Security is a key choice in systems administration. At the point when you consider security you need to take a gander at the alternative of somebody in your own organization messing with documents just as the outside world having the option to get to your system. One stage in ensuring yourself or an organization is by making sure about work area workstations. What I mean by a Desktop Workstation is that it is a mix of the equipment, working framework, application programming, and system associations of a PC. If I somehow happened to get increasingly explicit I would have referenced only one of the accompanying things above. Making sure about a work area workstation is a significant piece of your system. The explanation I state this is a result of the individual data of the organization or your very own data that is put away on the workstation. You need to recollect that with systems you are associated with the remainder of the world also. So by not making sure about your workstation you at that point are bound to have a programmer tap into your framework. On the off chance that this happens the programmer can do what ever he/she needs. They could erase records or simply duplicate them with the end goal for them to get your own data that they at that point can utilize. Numerous individuals dont understand that there are numerous security issues that can be stayed away from if the workstations are designed suitably. The vast majority of the equipment found in a PC is set by the production. Since it is set by the production they dont think about the security. They take a gander at different capacities and highlights. The motivation behind why the fabricates do this is on the grounds that they have no clue about what your securitys needs are or the companys. So as to have the best security; you should design the workstation to your necessities. Other than designing the workstation you should reconfigure the workstation as long as your prerequisites change. By doing this you will at that point be promising yourself the security you need. I feel that there are three primary issues that you have to think about making sure about a workstation. One of the three issues is classification. Classification is data that is put away on the workstation that is delighted improperly. There are numerous reasons why this may occur. Asedfds Essay Some of the reasons are that an individual without power can get to the workstation without authorization. Another explanation would be that an individual approaches however then perspectives the data that he/she wasnt assume to approach. The last explanation is the place an individual sends data over the system without authorization to do as such. The subsequent issue would be Integrity. Respectability is the place data might be changed on the workstation accidentally or they planed on changing the data. The third issue would be .

In current point of view, Beowulf may simply appear as a pitiless killer since he totally devastates Grendel by utilizing his uncovered hands. For instance, Beowulf possibly permitted Grendel to get away from when the beast â€Å"twisted in pain† and his â€Å"muscle and bone split. Beowulf, Tae Su Go, and Martin Luther King Jr, were unmistakable legends from the Anglo Saxon and current periods who battled against their adversaries for exemplary reasons. The Gang That The Author, Sudhir Venkantesh - 1148 Words

I would describe the gang that the author, Sudhir Venkantesh, studies in this book as a deviant group because they are not following usual or accepted standards in social behavior. â€Å"Deviance is a behavior, trait or belief that departs from a norm and generates a negative reaction in a particular group†. (Real World, Kerry Ferris, Jill Stein, p 153) According to this definition we can definitely see gangs departing from a norm by committing many crimes and not obeying the laws. One example to deviant behavior from the book is when Sudhir Venkantesh for the first times sees J.T and his gang beating up a man for not doing what he has been told. Sudhir Venkantesh states that â€Å"I had been hanging around J.T. for several months by now, and I’d†¦show more content†¦So it is acceptable behavior for the gang but not for the rest of the society. Philanthropist is a person who seeks to promote the welfare of others. If philanthropy means using charity to help others then J.T. the gang leader can think or sees himself a philanthropist as much as a gang leader. From the beginning of his existence in the book I was Hulya Eker Gang Leader for a Day and Sociological Concepts able to say that he had a different personality than a gang leader that anyone would think or define. J.T di not hurt Venkantesh nor let anyone else do anything bad to him in the first day they met and he also let him go. Later on when Venkantesh come again he just let him hang out with him to help with his research. J.T. knew what Venkantesh was doing and in spite of this J.T helped him with his research. That does not make him philanthropist truly but he always helped people around him. J.T. stated proudly of quitting his typical sales job in downtown Chicago to return to the projects and use his drug profits to help others. He helped in many different ways. One example form the book is that â€Å"he gave money to some local youth centers for sports equipment and computers†.(Gang leader for a Day,2008) Venkantesh, He also willingly loaned out his gang members to Robert Taylor tenant leaders, who deployed them on such tasks as escorting the elderly on errands or beating up a domestic abuser. Ruth Benedict’s Ethnography of Pueblo Culture, Patterns...

Response Piece – Silko amp; Benedict As noted in the response by Janet Tallman, there are three main themes concerning Ruth Benedict’s ethnography of Pueblo culture, Patterns of Culture, and Leslie Marmon Silko’s novel Ceremony. Both detail the importance of matrilineage, harmony and balance versus change, and ceremonies to the Pueblo Indians. It is important to note that Silko gives the reader a first-hand perspective of this lifestyle (she was raised in the Laguna Pueblo Reservation), while Benedict’s book is written from a third-person point of view. Because of this, it was fairly easy to see how much of the actual culture was overlooked or misinterpreted in Benedict’s work. While the above-mentioned themes about Pueblo Indians were†¦show more content†¦As the eldest daughter in her family, it is her duty to tend the household, took after her mother, and to raise Tayo after he was abandoned by his mother at a young age. In contrast to her strict adherence to Pueblo life, she is also a devout Christian. At several times in the story there are references to her polishing her church shoes with great care, or reading out of her large black bible. In Benedict’s ethnography, this would be as result of the culture selecting from among the possible traits in the surrounding region those traits which it could use, and discarding those which it could not (Chapter 3). Her husband Robert represents the role of husband and provider in their matrilineal culture -â€Å"he was patient with [their family] because he had nothing to say. The sheep, the horses, and the fields – everything belonged to them, including the good family name (pg. 32).† The only man who was able to assert himself in the family by right is the eldest son, Josiah. Auntie and Robert’s son Rocky is the representation of Indian youth fully embracing American culture. In another contrast to her set ways, Auntie sees her son as the one way her family will gain respect with the Laguna people again. Authorized To Act On Behalf Of Principal †Myassignmenthelp.Com

Question: Whether Jeremy Is In Violation Of His Duties As An Agent Against Aspirational Developments? Answer: Introducation An agency is the kind of relationship that is established between two parties. The first party is called a principal and the other party is called an agent. It is a kind of relationship wherein the agent is authorized to act on behalf of the principal with an outsider and any acts that are undertaken by an agent is binding upon the principal. There is no presence of any contractual relationship, the only requirements is the presence of authority on the part of the agent which is delegated upon him by his principal.[1] The relationship of an agency amid the principal and the agent can be established in four different manners. That is either expressly or by estoppel or by ratification or by operation of law. [2] Once an agency is established amid the principal and the agent, then, the principal is bound by all the actions of an agent. [3] Considering all the above factors, the authority of an agent can be categorised as: Actual Authority Actual authority are of two kinds:[4] Express authority An express authority is an authority directly delegated to an agent. In order to create an express authority it is necessary that the principal must either by agreement, words or deed grant an authority to the agent and is called an express actual authority[5]. Implied authority The authority that is additional to the express authority so that the acts of the principal can be honoured appropriately by the agent. These are the presumed authority that comes along with the express authority and is established in Hely-Hutchinson v Brayhead Ltd (1968). Apparent Authority A representation which is made to the third-party which portrays that the person is the agent of the principal and has the requisite authority to bind the principal is called an apparent authority. Acts conducted within the apparent authority by an agent is binding upon the principal. The representation must be made by the person who actually had the authority to enter into the contract and is held in Crabtree-Vickers PL v Australian Direct Mail Advertising Addressing Co. Pty Ltd (1975). In the leading case of Australia and New Zealand Bank Ltd v Ateliers de Construction Electriques de Charleroi [1976], it was held that the principal who had the actual authority must had made representation to the third party that the agent has the requisite authority to enter into a contract thereby granting an apparent authority to an agent. The principal of apparent authority is also analysed in Panorama Developments v Fidelis Furnishing Fabrics Ltd [1971]. The difference amid an apparent autotype and an actual authority was rightly analyzed in Freeman and Lockyer v Buckhurst Park Properties(Mangal) Ltd. Application of Law The facts reveal that Gabba Pty Ltd is a company and provides one of the luxury facility in the name of Noora Norra Golf Club Resort. Ricardo is the senior curator and ground manager at the Resort. The Resort is facing financial difficulties and thus the CEO of the Resort informs Ricardo that he is only authored to enter contracts on behalf of the Resort up to the amount of $ 10,000. It is assumed that the CEO of the Resort has an actual authority to enter into contract of behalf of the company. Thus, since the CEO has the power to enter contracts on behalf of the company, thus, he can delegate such authority to his agent as rightly established in Freeman and Lockyer v Buckhurst Park Properties(Mangal) Ltd . Under the law established in Hely-Hutchinson an express authority is delegated to Ricardo to contract on behalf of the CEO but only to the extent of $ 10,000. Now, the authority that is delegated to Ricardo is limited in extent. However, Richard exceeded this express authority when he enters into a contract with Willow Landscaping for a contract amount of $ 13,000 with an extra cost of $ 4000 (water feature). Later CEO after considering the circumsttbces tells Willow to Proceed. Thus, by making a representation to Willow to proceed an apparent authority is granted to Ricardo thereby authorizing his him contract with Willow for an amount exceeding $ 10,000. As per Australia and New Zealand Bank Ltd v Ateliers de Construction Electriques de Charleroi [1976], apparent authority is granted to Ricardo and the acts undertaken by Ricardo within such authority is binding upon the CEO and thus upon the company. Thus, the contract entered by Ricardo is within his apparent authority. An agent is the authorized representative of his principal. The principal appoints an agent, grants him authorities and empower him to carry out the tasks that are authorized to him by the principal under actual or apparent authority. Any person can be appointed as an agent by the principal including a minor. There are several kinds of agents that is, general agent, special agents, and universal agents, etc. whatever may be the category of an agent there are few duties that every agent must comply with. The same are:[6] Duty not to make secret profits - An agent is not permitted to make any secret profits and reimburse to the principal. In Regier v Campbell-Stuart [1939] the agent was held liable for making secret profits. Duty to make full disclosure to the principal - Every agent must disclose any personal interest and all relevant information that arise while carrying out his acts as an agent. In Mcpherson V Watt (1877), the agent in order to own the property of his principal (which he is authorised to sell on behalf of the principal) brought the property in the name of his brother. It was held that the agent was in violation of his duty to avoid conflicts of interest and the contract was not allowed; An agent must act as per the directions and instructions of the principal; No agent can delegate his duties unless he is specifically authorised to do so by the principal; Every agent must act in a fiduciary manner and with all good faith; Care and skill must be performed while carrying out his duties; If an agent is found to be guilty of not performing his duties appropriately, then there are various consequences that can be faced by him. The same are dismissal, no commission; sue for losses suffered by the principal. The agent can be held liable towards his principal when the agent does not comply with his duties and the directions of his principal. The law is now applied. Application of Law Jeremy is the agent of Aspirational Developments Pty Ltd and he is assigned with the tasks of selling high-rise units off the plan. He recently became aware that third competitor is facing financial difficulties thus their units might become valuable. In order to earn profits he ask his friend to arrange for funds so that he can purchase three units and lets split the profit in two. It is submitted that Jeremy is the agent and thus he must comply with his tasks with all due care and skills. He must not ring in nay personal gains and if there is any conflict of interest then the interest of principal must prevail (Mcpherson V Watt). However, by buying three units without disclosing the fact to his principal, Jeremy has made secret profits and thus is in violation of his duties as an agent. As per Regier v Campbell-Stuartno agent is permitted to gain secret profits and the same must be reimbursing to his principal. He is even in breach of his duties when in return for a small payment, he informs several people who have expressed an interest in purchasing a unit of the news. Thus, Jeremy must face liabilities for his actions and he must reimburse the profits that are gained by him. His services can also be terminated by Aspirational Developments Conclusion Jeremy is in violation of his duties as an agent against Aspirational Developments and must face liabilities for the same References Gibson, Andy and Fraser, Douglas, Business Law 2014, (Pearson Higher Education AU,11-Oct-2013). Avatar Essay Example

Avatar Paper The film Avatar is about an American corporation that is mining rare mineral called unobtainium that can only be found in Pandora. Jake Sully, a handicapped ex-Marine, has to operate an avatar and act as a bodyguard because his twin brother who was trained to operate an avatar was killed. Soon after, Jake was told to persuade the Native inhabitants of Pandora, the Navi, to move out of the way so that the corporation could mine the huge unobtainium deposit located under their home. After many experience living as a Navi, Jake managed to become one of their people. The corporation moved in to destroy the Navis home because Jake took too long. Once the Navis home was destroyed, Jake realized how evil the corporation was and rebels against the corporation. In the end, the Navi and Jake manage to gain victory over the Marines and the evil corporation. Many have criticized this film as racist because of the male protagonist being a white man. I dont think Avatar is a racist film at all. Personally I didnt feel offended that there were no Asians or African Americans in the film. If the Jake was played by a black man like Will Smith or Denzel Washington, then the ending would be spoiled because we watched enough Will Smith movies to know that he will save the Navi and end up being the hero. Using a not-so-well-known actor would question how the film would end. Also, Jake is not the only one who decides to change sides. The operations leader, Selfridge, also learns that what hes doing is wrong. In this case, the Navi worship a goddess named Eewa. They are very religious beings that live in a gigantic tree. (LOsservatore Romano). I dont think the film was in any way offensive towards religion. The Navi were representatives of the Natives in our time, who were also very in touch with nature. The conservatives in the US claim that the movie is anti-American and anti-capitalist in its portrayal of humans as greedy creatures. I disagree with the conservatives. Greed is one of the true natures of humans. We are naturally greedy and want more then what we have already. James Cameron wasnt trying to offend the citizens of the United States but just trying show the nature of humans. The doctor in the film, Grace, was shown to be smoking throughout the entire movie. Smoke Free Movies, a campaign, took offence to this act. James Cameron states that he was making the character look evil. I agree with James Cameron when he responded to this comment by saying that we need to get used to modern times. If smoking is bad and shouldnt be shown in movies, then wouldnt that mean stealing and murder shouldnt be shown as well because its bad. The Marine Corps accused Avatar of stereotyping members of the Marines. I think that Avatar does stereotype members of the Marines. All the Marines in the movie kill the creatures and Navi without hesitation. When the Hometree was being bombarded, none of the ships backed out or even thought about disobeying except the girl. This shows how ruthless and greedy these men are. I would have made it so that more than just the girl back off from the attack just to show how sympathetic they are. All those people who wish Pandora is real are total losers. Its a science-fiction movie for goodness sakes. How can you criticize a movie by saying the alien planet doesnt exist. Some person even said he wanted to live like a Navi. I definitely disagree with their criticism towards Avatar. I cant believe people would actually become depressed because Pandora doesnt exist. Thats just plain stupid. All those people who wish Pandora need to go experience the world more. Besides, even if Pandora was real, Im sure theyd end up going there and getting killed.

Discover the History of the Redstone Rockets

Discover the History of the Redstone Rockets The Birthplace of NASAs Rockets Spaceflight and space exploration would be impossible without rocket technology. Although rockets have been around since the first fireworks invented by the Chinese, it wasnt until the 20th century that they were fashioned specifically to send people and materials to space. Today, they exist in a variety of sizes and weights and are used to send people and supplies to the International Space Station and deliver satellites to orbit. In the history of spaceflight in the United States, the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama has played a huge role in developing, testing, and delivering the rockets NASA needed for its major missions. The Redstone rockets were the first step to space in the 1950s and 1960s. Meet the Redstone Rockets The Redstone rockets were developed by a group of rocketry specialists and scientists working with Dr. Wernher von Braun and other German scientists at the Redstone Arsenal. They arrived at the end of World War II and had been active in developing rockets for the Germans during the war. The Redstones were the direct descendants of the German V-2 rocket  and provided a high-accuracy, liquid-propelled, surface-to-surface missile designed to counter Soviet Cold War and other threats throughout the postwar  years and the early years of the Space Age. They also provided a perfect avenue to space. Redstone to Space A modified Redstone was used to launch Explorer 1 to space - the first U.S. artificial satellite to go into orbit. That occurred on  January 31, 1958, using a four-stage Jupiter-C model.  A Redstone rocket also launched the Mercury capsules on their sub-orbital flights in 1961, inaugurating Americas human spaceflight program. Inside the Redstone The Redstone had a liquid-fueled engine that burned alcohol and liquid oxygen to produce about 75,000 pounds (333,617 newtons) of thrust. It was nearly 70 feet (21 meters) long and slightly under 6 feet (1.8 meters) in diameter. At burnout, or when the propellant was exhausted, it had a speed of 3,800 miles per hour (6,116 kilometers per hour). For guidance, the Redstone used an all-inertial system featuring a gyroscopically stabilized platform, computers, a programmed flight path taped into the rocket before launch, and the activation of the steering mechanism by signals in flight. For control during powered ascent, the Redstone depended on tail fins that had movable rudders,  as well as refractory carbon vanes mounted in the rocket exhaust. The first Redstone missile was launched from the militarys missile range at Cape Canaveral, Florida on August 20, 1953. Though it traveled only 8,000 yards (7,315 meters), it was considered a success and 36 more models were launched through 1958, when it was put into U.S. Army service in Germany. More about the Redstone Arsenal The Redstone Arsenal, for which the rockets are named, is a long-standing Army post. It currently hosts a number of Defense Department operations. It was originally a chemical weapons arsenal used during World War II. After the war, as the U.S. was liberating Europe and bringing back both V-2 rockets and rocket scientists from Germany, Redstone became a building and testing ground for various families of rockets, including the Redstone  and the Saturn rockets. As NASA was formed and built out its bases around the country, Redstone Arsenal was where rockets used to send satellites and people to space were designed and built into the 1960s.   Today, Redstone Arsenal maintains its importance as a rocket research and development center. Its still being used for rocket work, largely for Department of Defense use. It also hosts the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. On its outskirts, the U.S. Space Camp operates year-round, giving children and adults a chance to explore the history and technology of space flight. Revised and expanded by Carolyn Collins Petersen.

Case Study Example Manufacturing must be closely intertwined with the current enlightened philosophy of marketing where products are expected to meet customer wants, needs, preferences and marketed in a socially responsible manner that is pleasing and beneficial. Manufacturers, such as Mattel Corporation, who manufacture products for children have the responsibility of ensuring that the products are safe in both intended and non-intended uses so as to protect children from harm since, ordinarily, children lack the literacy to comprehend the complete functioning of a product. Moreover, the manufacturers must ensure that the society’s apprehensions on children’s privacy and rights are upheld as this will somewhat guarantee business perpetuity. What’s more, the manufacturers have the responsibility of ensuring that the components used in manufacturing the product are meet the health and safety standards and accurate information indicated on the products label. For instance, the age th at is supposed to use the product and the chemical components should be clearly indicated. Environmental matters must also be taken into consideration by ensuring that any substandard products are safely confiscated so that the public does not gain access

Corporate Sustainability Reporting Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Corporate Sustainability Reporting - Essay Example Some of the issues that concern CSR are discussed below. CSR are generally prepared by independent agencies based on the guidelines laid down in 1997 by the Global reporting Initiative (GRI). The GRI has tried to develop objective criteria that can become the basis for universally accepted reporting standards as in the case of audited financial statements. In 2006, a second set of guidelines was issued known as the G3 Reporting Framework. As of now however, companies are free to observe the GRI guidelines, as per their convenience and at different levels of accordance. As of July 2006, "just over 20 % of organizations issuing CSR reports using GRI guidelines did so at the [maximum] assurance level". Observance of GRI guidelines thus, though desirable is not enforceable and the discretion of following them in 'letter and spirit' rests with various organizations. The absence of any audit by an independent body reduces the value of a CSR, just as an un-audited financial statement of a company is of no value. However, there are many aspects of a CSR pertaining to non-financial aspects that are either, "qualitative statements about risk management and performance [or] quantitative measures that are not reliable enough to audit". Hence this aspect of a CSR is more of an opinion expressed by the company as well as the auditors, appealing more to emotion and based on individual perceptions. It is to remove this anomaly that the new G3 Reporting Framework has been compiled. Challenges of Providing Auditor Assurance The challenge of providing credibility to any CSR rests on firstly, the criteria that the management uses to prepare the CSR and secondly, the standards the auditor uses to assess the CSR. Adding to the difficulty of assessing a CSR is the fact that these reports are based on facts and figures that may be outside the area of expertise of the auditor(s). For any report to have credibility, it must be based on facts and figures and appeal to common sense. Quantitative aspects such as accident rates or amount of carbon dioxide emitted can be commented upon objectively and without bias. However, there are many other performance measures which cannot be audited, "with a high enough level of assurance to provide an opinion". In such cases, an element of subjectivity or bias in favour of the company being reported upon is likely. This probably stems from the fact that it is in the auditor's interests to seek the continued patronage of the company. More and more companies are disclosing their social and environmental performance as part of their annual financial reports. CPAs will increasingly play an important role both in preparing as well as analyzing such reports. Interestingly enough, a survey of investors and analysts revealed that as many as 90 % of the people wanted companies to include aspects such as environmental sustainability and corporate governance as part of their annual reports. This only underscores the importance of having objective criteria for measuring performance in non-financial fields in order to arrive at a true and fair view of a company based on facts and

The Labor Movement in the 1920s Essay Example for Free

The Labor Movement in the 1920s Essay As a correction to the wartime effort, inflation and unemployment increased because there was not a need to mass-produce products for war, and America had to return to normalcy. The amount of labor unrest increased during this time period, which is very obvious by the increase of labor strikes. There was a strike by the United States Steel Corporation workers in 1919. They were annoyed with their seven 12 hour workdays a week. The leader of the American Federation of Labor joined the International Workers of the World (which was a communist group dedicated to freeing the bonds of workers) after the strike. A committee published a report that illustrated the horrible working conditions, which eventually caused steel companies to reduce to an eight-hour day. The United Mine Workers went on strike in hope of receiving better wages and a shorter workday. Attorney General Palmer got a court order that told the strikers to return to work. Lewis formally declared the strike over, but it continued for another month until Wilson appointed an arbitrator to decide the remaining issues. The Mine Workers received a 27 percent pay increase, but the same hours. The police in Boston wanted pay raises and sent a group to commissioner Coolidge, to hear their demands. Coolidge fired the group and the rest of the force went on strike. The National Guard restored the peace and Coolidge hired a new police force and granted the demands of the strikers. During this time period a group of stores called chain stores were becoming popular, they spread throughout the country, were owned by one person, and charged lower prices for products. The 122 million U.S. citizens began losing their jobs because of the throng of migrating immigrants who worked for low wages, modern technology becoming useful in the make of products. Working men had a hard time adjusting to women that were also fighting against inequality for the right to work. Because of prosperity, labor unions lost membership from 5 million in the early 20s to 3.5 million by  the late 20s. Corporate and Government attack on labor strikes became extremely intense. People who participated in strikes were beaten and sometimes killed. And last a small fact, the average annual income for the typical American worker was only $1,574.

Walt Whitmans Influence on Germany :: Walt Whitman Germany Poetry Poets Essays

Walt Whitman's Influence on Germany Walt Whitman (1819-1892) is considered to be one of the greatest American poets of the nineteenth century. While Edgar Allan Poe may have been more widely read, Whitman had more international writers actively respond to him and his poetry than any other American poet. A century after his death, writers around the world are still in dialogue with him, pondering the questions he posed, arguing with him and elaborating on his insights. People have been attracted to Whitman for numerous reasons. For his time he was truly unconventional and introduced the modern lyric with his autobiographical collection of prose poems called Leaves of Grass. The impact Whitman has, however, exceeds technical innovation; it lies in his universal appeal. Walt Whitman is many things to many people. The poet once remarked about the various photographs of himself he used to come upon, "I meet new Walt Whitmans every day. There are a dozen of me afloat." Perhaps even more manifold than the physical images of the author are the ways in which he has been perceived. The purpose of this paper is to examine how Walt Whitman's poetry influenced Germany. How the poet was received, which aspects of Whitman's philosophy most attracted Germans, ultimately has to do with the Zeitgeist, the intellectual climate of the day. For numerous authors Whitman has primarily been a poet of democracy and political questions have often been at the center of the international responses to Whitman. While this aspect of his poetry has inspired people from states such as the former Soviet Union and China, it has not been the only theme to spellbind his admirers. Authors from India, for example, have been able to identify with Whitman on a spiritual plane, seeing in him a Hindu vision. Clearly the way in which people relate to the poet has much to do with what is essential and pertinent to their own lives. Whitman's Influence For Whitman's contemporaries the most obvious deviation from the norm was his prose style. Whitman does not submit his thoughts to metered rhyme, yet they are rhythmic, just not in the traditional sense of a stanza. His free verse forms have been likened to the ebb and flow of the ocean tides, which inspired him throughout his life. The innovation of Whitman's poetry, however, exceeds structure and pattern and those who have admired his poetry have also been intrigued by its content.

Whether or not the civil rights movement has achieved equal rights for black people in USA and if so, to what extent

In this essay, I will aim to establish whether or not the civil rights movement has achieved equal rights for black people in USA and if so, to what extent. In order to do this, we must compare the situation for blacks in USA currently, to that of blacks many years ago. Absolutely no one would even try to argue that Black Americans had equal rights during, or even directly after the abolition of slavery. This would be ridiculous bearing in mind that many were forced to work from sunrise to sunset, an eighteen hour day in some places, with few, if any rights at all. At one point, slave owners were even given specific rights to brand, maim, whip or even burn disobedient slaves. This hardly indicates any sort of equal rights. They were unable to vote, serve on juries receive an education and work in certain trades. The fact that they were unable to serve on juries almost made certain that any black man could be tried and convicted even though totally innocent. Also, no voting meant no black politicians, and no politicians meant no say in government. There were a few lucky blacks living in the south who had managed to obtain freedom, some by purchasing their liberties and others handed their freedom after their masters had passed away. However, these blacks were constantly living in the fear that they could once again be taken into slavery. Most blacks had now been freed, yet they were not compensated for past labours, leaving them jobless and almost pennyless. Many â€Å"white supremacy† organisations such as the Ku Klux Klan were formed solely to intimidate the black population. Public lynchings and public beatings became common place and very rarely was anything done about it in the courts as it was supported by many officials. After slavery was abolished, many years of black campaigning followed and gradually, the campaigning became more and more succesful. In 1870, the fifteenth ammendment was passed declaring the right for all to be able to vote regardless of race. This was seen as a real breakthrough yet celebrations were proved to be far too premature. At first everything seemed fine. States which had black majorities soon began to have black politicians who were more understanding to their plight. Free education was introduced and the system of having to own land to be able to have the right to vote was also scrapped. All seemed well and good until 1877, when the army decided that it was time to pull out of the southern states. This immediately left the blacks vulnerable to attack from the various groups which had been formed who had a great hatred towards the blacks. These secret organisations began using violence in order to prevent blacks from voting and this led to an almost immediate change. The lack of the black vote led to all white governments once again being elected and this in turn saw the re-introduction of many laws against those African Americans. Once again, control of the blacks was firmly in the hands of their white rulers. ‘Jim Crow' laws were introduced enforcing segregation in various araes of life. Transport saw separate seating for blacks and whites. Separate schools and hospitals were also introduced. The segregation even went as far as having different cemetries for deceased whites and deceased blacks, even in church, they were sat seperately. The much lower wages that the blacks were being payed meant that they could only afford housing in more run down neighbourhoods, again leading to a seperation, with â€Å"black only† towns. This residential segregation was even made compulsory in some states. Inter-racial marriages became a massive target for groups such as The Ku Klux Klan. They felt that this would lead to a society where racial categorization would become difficult and white dominance would become hard to maintain. Again violence was used to ensure that no inter-racial marriages could take place. If any kind of recession came round, black employees were always the first to be fired regardless of experience or quality of work and no blacks were allowed to join unions. This of course meant that in the event of any strike action, the blacks would continue to work arousing yet more hatred and hostility from their fellow white compatriots. After the white governments had been firmly re-established, the power of blacks was continually undermined. Successful black businessmen were attacked and any attempts to form black protection groups were quickly quashed. The KKK also introduced lynching for those blacks accused of commiting crimes, many of whom were completely innocent. This was seen as not really a form of punishment for criminals, but more a way of intimidating the local black population into accepting the rule of the whites. Yet again, the blacks were forced to accept the inhumane ways in which they were being treated and once again there was nothing they could really do about it. One hundred years on, to what extent have civil rights been achieved for blacks? On visiting America now, and comparing life to that of a hundred years ago, the most apparent difference is desegregation. Whereas blacks and whites were forced to attend separate schools, take part in leisure activities seperately, use separate transport and forced to be segregated in the supreme court, there is now no lawful segregation in the USA. Blacks have been given equal rights as far as voting goes and it has been this way for many years now. However, this did not mean that all Blacks were suddenly voting. There was still the problem of persuading blacks to register although, this has now been rectified with very public registration campaigns. The result has been a huge increase in the proportion of blacks registered to vote. There have been monumental chnages in attitudes towards blacks which has meant the uprising of many black celebrities which would have been unthinkable until recent years. A prime example of this could be that of black boxer, Mohammed Ali. His refusal to participate in the Vietnam War because of his personal beliefs, and being prepared to go to jail rather than back down, earnt him world wide respect. This went along with the respect that he had already gained from his doubtless talent in the ring. To this day, Ali is one of the most highly respected sportsmen throughout the world. Various blakc musicians have reached stardom also. Examples include Stevie Wonder, Tupac Shakur, Billy Halliday and Bessie Smith, who had to fight adversity throughout her career. However, even here there is the possiblity of racial discrimination having taking place as it is widely claimed that, after a car crash Bessie Smith was refused treatment due to the colour of her skin and as a direct result, died from excessive blood loss. Blacks have also been very successful in Hollywood, with both Will Smith and Samuel L. Jackson being among the top ten earners. This does not even take into acount Denzel washington, Danny Glover, Whoopi Goldberg and many others. The major turning point as far as civil rights were concerened, was the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This finally insured equal oppurtunity for all, in terms of employment and otherwise. There were also affirmative acion programs set up to help those blacks, who through no fault of their own, were given very poor educations. Some blacks have even made a success of themselves by writing or talking about their difficulties in achieving liberation. Maya Angeou is one such person. The political influence of blacks is always rising and I have already spoken about the rise in blacks registered to vote. Recently, we have also seen the rise to prominence of some black politicians. Namely, Jesse Jackson and Colin Powell. Jackson ran for presidency in both the 1984 and 1988 elections and although he failed on both occasions, his skills as a negotiater have been proven on many separate occasions. His current title is Washington's special envoy to Africa. Colin Powell has come into the limelight much more after the very tragic events of September 2001. Much praise has been heaped on the Secretary Of State for the way in which he has handled the cris. He was often referred to as â€Å"the face of America† in the aftermath of the attacks. There have also been great strides made in the way of economic progress. Many blacks have managed to break through into the middle classes. â€Å"The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air† is a popular, black sitcom in which one such family is portrayed. The father is a well respected lawyer and the family is shown to be living in great luxery. Similarly, there have been other very successful â€Å"black† shows such as â€Å"The Cosby Show. There are now many, many black homeowners also, in complete contrast to the slavery which existed a century earlier. As yet, I have talked about the great amount of change and progress which has been achieved for blacks in USA, however, in the same period of time there have been many incidents and there are many facts which suggest that not too much has really changed. For example, many people argue that there is a continuity in attitudes of discrimination and they point to certain events to support this. Accusations of police brutality and heavy handiness towards blacks are constant and the Rodney King incident seems to justify this. Rodney King was a drunken, black driver, who after being stopped by police, was brutally assaulted by four police officers. The whole incident was video-taped by an on looker. Because of the video-tape, there was a resulting trial in which all four police officers were accused of using excessive force. However, the entirely white jury judged all four to have been not guilty of all charges and the result was the largest riots in Los Angeles' history. Many people were injured during these riots. Consequently, there was a second trial, in which two officers were again acquitted and the other two received minimum jail terms. There were fears of a second round of rioting which never materialised. Other such incidents include an African refugee being shot 24 times by police officers. To this day, there are still more blacks than whites on death row, which again leads to calls of discrimination by the police force and law courts. Earlier, I spoke about black successes in politics, pointing to Jesse Jackson and Colin Powell as examples. However, there has still been no black president, and it still does not even seem like a possibility in the foreseeable future. Even, with the prominence of Jackson and Powell, it can still be said that there is an exclusion of blacks in politics. The poverty trap of many years earlier also still exists in many parts of America, where the idea that if a black person was forced to live in a ghetto due to poor wages, there was really no way out and achieving something for their children as opportunities and resources were greatly limited. In conclusion, I think it is obviously clear that change has been achieved and progress has been made as far as civil rights are concerned and there will always be isolated incidents, which suggest otherwise. A great distance has been traveled on the road to achieving equal rights and hopefully, the last few miles will also be covered in the near future.

The Rise Of Feminism Of The 19th And 20th Centuries

The rise of feminism in the 19th and 20th centuries brought along a deeper understanding of the inherent perceptions of masculine and feminine societal roles. Our interpretations of a text is highly influenced by our gender, and as a reader, it affects how the presentation of gender in fictional works either conforms, or diverges, from the societal gender expectations. As the target audience of fairy tales are often tailored towards young children, fairy tales are generally the very first kind of literature with which children are exposed to. The literary works often convey a motif and allows children to discover the differences between good and evil or consequences of their own demeanor. However, they are also subsequently molded by the†¦show more content†¦The research was based on the analysis of two well-known fairy tales by Hans Christin Andersen, namely The Snow Queen and The Little Mermaid. This paper will bring attention to the typical gender stereotypes present in t he fairy tales and the ideologies it can bring to the reader. Published in 1845, The Snow Queen stands out from the other literary texts by its complex story and, most importantly, by revolving around women. In the era the story was written in, majority of readers are all familiar with tales in which the male hero saves the female from her struggle and resolves the conflict of the story. As such, the narrative of The Snow Queen not only explores the themes of female empowerment but also conveys an interesting outlook on the role of women through the events that unfold in the story. Beginning with the Snow Queen, we learn more about her when Kay’s grandmother tells her story to Gerda and Kay. She describes the Snow Queen as a being with power and authority as she compares her to a queen bee who â€Å"is flying there where the swarm is thickest. She is the largest of them all† (Andersen 2). The Snow Queen is portrayed as a force of nature and the embodiment of winter, ho wever, she is also a woman. Throughout the story, we can see further evidence of the patriarchal views in the fear and power that surrounds the Snow Queen’s
